On Monday, I sent out an email about the problems RubberZone has been facing - it was a bit of a distress call. (If you didn't see it, you can read it here.)

While I wasn't quite sure what to expect, the response has just positively exceeded even the most optimistic scenarios. Dozens of people responded by purchasing subscriptions and multiple downloads. This week's activity has completely erased the deficit from December and January, bringing things back to a normal baseline. (As “normal” as things can be for a rubber and bondage porn community site, anyway.)

What this means is that RubberZone has the breathing room to continue operating a few months without having to make drastic decisions.

Of course, I also realize that because many people renewed early, and because over 90% of the purchases came from existing customers, sales are likely to lag again soon, but this nonetheless gives me room to continue to make new content, and get caught up on some of the tasks that have been neglected (like reviewing submitted stories).

The next major crossroads for RubberZone will come in late April, when our merchant account (credit card processing) is up for renewal. bAlthough our account performance is far better than your average corner coffee shop, adult sites are subject to much higher scrutiny. (In fact, many adult businesses cannot get a new merchant account at all these days, but we've had ours for over 15 years.) Every review cycle, the merchant banks come up with new prohibitions on content. This year, with all the political pressure and anti-adult-content laws being passed, it's an open question as to what restrictions will be applied, or whether we will be allowed to be renewed at all. (Incidentally, we pay $1,500 a year to Visa and Mastercard for the privilege of being audited. Discover does not charge us a fee. Keep that in mind when selecting what card to use when making a purchase from an adult site.)
